The start of the cycling road race

Hello everyone,
I have just returned from Beijing. I’m up right now at 4:30 am with a little bit of jet lag. My internet access in China was limited so my updates and stories will come now that I have returned. The Olympics were great. While it started out looking very difficult to get tickets this year that soon opened up and I was able to attend a number of events. While some of the top draws (such as swimming and diving) were not available for reasonable prices many other events were available. I was able to attend road cycling, basketball, baseball, tennis, fencing, handball and track and field. Further, I was able to check out many of the important tourist sites in Beijing including the Great Wall, the Summer Palace and the Temple of Heaven.
There were many stories that demonstrated powerful success principles for life and business. Over the next week and a half I will share many of these principles with you. Later this morning my wife and I leave for a direct marketing confernece in Salt Lake City. This conference is one of my favorite times each year and it always inspires me singificantly. I look forward to sharing what I learned.
More stories and pictures to come!

My wife and I recently entered into a fishing competition. A group of us entered the competition together. We had two boats and five people: my wife and I, her father, our niece, and a neighbor. We had two boats between us.
The first morning, my wife and I went in the boat with the neighbor. We didn’t know him, he didn’t know us. It was an eye opening morning, and it was NOT because of the fish! Instead, my wife and I were shocked to hear how this man spoke of his wife. He continually complained about her, stating that he did all of the work and that “she doesn’t do anything”.
Certainly this man was out of line. It reminded me of an important saying, “always speak well of people in their absence.” In other words, never speak negatively of someone behind their back. Don’t gossip, don’t complain, only speak good things. Speaking negatively of others when they are not present does not help anyone, it only causes hurt:
- You don’t look any better. By speaking negatively about others when they are not there, those that hear you will view you more negatively.
- People will not trust you. If you speak negatively about someone else, how do I know you won’t do the same to me?
- The person you are speaking of doesn’t look better. The words you say will have an effect on the person you are speaking about. Their reputation will take a hit. People will believe what you say, even if they inwardly ridicule you for saying it.
If instead, you do the opposite and speak good of others in their absence many good things will happen:
- You will look better. People like to be around positive people and by speaking well of others you demonstrate your positive life outlook.
- You will feel better. It always feels better to lift up others. You may be tempted to speak down about someone so that you look superior to them, but that is rarely the true effect.
- People will trust you more. These people will see how you speak highly of others, and believe that you may speak the same about them.
- You elevate the standing of the other person. Not only do people trust you and think more highly of you, but your words have now elevated the stature of another person. You are making a difference in their life.
- The other person will eventually hear about your kind words. While I might not share negative comments made about someone, I’m more likely to share the positive comment, and even compliment the person in question about it.
In our fishing competition, the negative neighbor didn’t do any good to himself or his wife by speaking negatively about her. A simple switch of attitude would have been helpful. When others are absent, always speak well of them.

One reason that I love my home business is because it gives me the ability to travel more. The residual income comes in whether I work or not, and it provides extra funds to travel more.
Here are some recent photos from our travels:

Seth Godin has a great post about the difference between trying to get ahead by beating the system and trying to get a head by working the system.
We see this all the time in the home business world. People start a new business and try to re-invent the wheel. They look for any shortcut to get to the tip. These people think that they know how to do things better than those already successful in the company.
The thing is, sometimes these people do get some quick success, however it is always short lived. Those who want do develop a long-term residual income will work within the system, following the path set forth by others. If and when you pass the people who at the top of the company then, and only then, have you earned the right to blaze a trail. Until then, work the system that exists and you will achieve the results that others have.
Here is Seth’s Post:

A very interesting and valuable read is “The Four Hour Work Week” by Tim Ferriss.
http://www.fourhourworkweek.com/blog/
While I hold a higher value to “work” than Tim does, I really appreciate many of his ideas.
One of the best concepts is that in today’s world you can often work from anywhere. That means you can work from home instead of the office. It also means that you can travel the world and work while you do it.
For the month of May, my wife’s work has taken us to Istanbul, Turkey. Thankfully, my job and businesses are such that I can accomplish a lot on the road. In fact I will likely accomplish more in May than I would have if we had stayed at home. On top of that, I can use spare time to visit the wonderful sights of this historic city.
I still need to get better at working while traveling. I didn’t bring our VOIP phone, and having it would have been helpful. I have missed out on the ability to pick up the phone a few times. Thankfully between email, Facebook and instant messaging I’m getting the communications I need out.
Where would you like to work from? Is it from home, or around the world? Does your job allow you to do that? If not, what could you do to supplement or replace your income?
