Helpful post. I have a great suggestion for the early steps (to 3). A new site just launched that allows you to enter just the basics (income, expenses and debt) to give you a sense of the "big picture." Like the spreadsheet, but simpler. So many people are not aware of their surplus (or deficit!) amount to even begin an actual budget. http://www.debtspark.com.

[...] The more difficult your financial situation (ie. the more often you answered YES in part one) the more of these steps you will need to take. You may even need more drastic measures. Part of cutting your spending is to develop a clear, written budget. Most budget systems are complex and set people up for failure. Here is how to set up a simple budget system. [...]

These are great tips! I used to insist on using a credit card for everything so I'd have great records of where the money was going... but it was still going. I started using the cash withdrawal method (I get mine out weekly), and I've had great results. It's a visual reminder, every time I pay for something, of how much I have left.

I use an Excel spreadsheet doing exactly (almost) what you are doing. I wrote a blog on it 2-3 weeks ago but you laid it out much better. Good Job! Another tactic thats useful is use the money envelopes at the bank. I know it may not be a good idea to keep cash laying around but I get 4-5 envelopes for each budget period (column) and put gas money in one, entertainment in another and so on. It also takes a lot of discipline to employ a strict cash system, but once you become disciplined enough to not utilize credit cards, etc. when your cash is gone you will be in a much better financial situation.
